Warrick Dunn, builder
I'm a qualified carpenter, and I've spent more than 20 years on Melbourne residential building sites. I started Room to Grow to build directly for clients: one builder, responsible for the whole job, from the first meeting to handover.
Background
I've worked for other builders as a carpenter, leading hand, site supervisor, site manager and project manager. Much of that work was on architect-designed homes in Melbourne's inner suburbs, including Albert Park, South Yarra and Toorak, where tight sites, heritage controls and detailed documentation are part of every job.
Working on the tools and then running sites taught me the same thing from both sides: good work comes from planning, clear communication and someone on site who is accountable for the result.
Experience
Projects I've worked on include:
- A heritage-listed Federation house. Renovation, extension and a boundary-to-boundary basement, including propping and new hanging beams to save an original solid-plaster ceiling. Role: site supervisor and leading hand.
- A new three-storey home with basement and rooftop deck. Structural steel, brick veneer on steel lintels and craned-in roof planters on a narrow laneway site. Role: site manager, from the ground-floor slab to handover.
These projects were delivered by the builders I worked for at the time. They show the kind of work I have run, not Room to Grow projects.
Registration and home warranty
I'm registered with the Building and Plumbing Commission as a Domestic Builder (Unlimited), registration DB-U 101983.
For eligible domestic building work over $20,000, Home Warranty cover is arranged through the Building and Plumbing Commission, as Victorian law requires.
